Casablanca is not a movie, its a film. It transports you back to a time where cigarettes were still your friends, where your bcbc (bourbon champagne blood content) needed to be above .08. This movie isn't about moderation it has all the plot, all the characterization and witty dialog a person could possibly ingest in the span of this movie. Rick always looks like a man's man, Ilsa's eyes are always glassy with emotion. This movie is so good you forget that it was shot in black and white. Just like its colors, this movie's characters are all tinted. Rick isn't a night in shining armor, he's sarcastic and we love that. As a people, no one loves sarcasm more, except maybe the British, but we love Rick's demeanor so much pieces of his dialog have leaked into everyday American pop culture. In fact I'm sure almost any person would know some of his quotes even if they haven't seen the movie. That fact alone renders this film under classic status.
Ok, so some of the scenes of romance flashbacks are a bit cheesy, and the over dramatized death fall after the loud firing of a gun is a bit extravagant but that is half of what makes Casablanca so great.
